Full description

How did the Scandinavian Vikings land on the Irish shore, and why did they call their settlement “Dublin”? Hear the epic origin story of the Irish capital, immerse yourself in the fascinating tales of the Viking kings and warriors, and see places related to their history and heritage. Discover the forgotten Viking kingdom in Dublin!

Join this 2-hour walking tour to discover the traces of Dublin’s Viking history. The Dublin longphort was founded in the mid 9th-century and it soon became the epicenter of Viking trade routes in Ireland. Follow our Expert Guide through the cobblestone streets of Dublin to learn how the Viking invasion impacted the country’s cultural heritage. We begin our adventure in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the site where St. Patrick converted pagans to Christians long before the arrival of Vikings.

We’ll take a relaxing walk to the Christ Church Cathedral, which was originally built by the Viking King Sitric Silkenbeard. The guide will tell us about the Hiberno-Norse artifacts displayed within this Gothic church and the nearby Dublinia, a museum dedicated to Viking history. The guide will also show us The Brazen Head, which dates back to 1198 when the Norman and the Viking merchants gathered here to enjoy Dublin’s hospitality. We’ll explore the Wood Quay area, which was built on the remnants of the 9th-century Viking settlement. Underneath these streets you can find hundreds of forgotten dwellings and graves of the Viking warriors. We’ll end our tour in the gardens of Dublin Castle, searching for the underground waterway that helped to inspire the name of this Viking city!
