Malbork Castle – Visit the World’s Largest Castle

Join our tour and see the amazing Malbork Castle! Since the end of 1997, Malbork Castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the official national Historic Monuments of Poland.

Malbork Castle is a 13th-century Teutonic castle and fortress. It is located near the town of Malbork in Poland as well as the river Nogat. Moreover, measured by the land area it is the world’s largest castle.

The History

Teutonic Knights built the castle in the 13th century. In the early 14th century, the Grand Master Siegfried von Feuchtwanged moved his office into Malbork. Then, big transformations in the castle began. They originally named it Marienburg in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The Malbork Castle was expanded few times due to the growing number of Knights. Once, 3,000 knights lived there. For that reason, it became the largest fortified Gothic building in Europe.

The castle has numerous layers of defensive walls as well as subdivisions. It consists of three separate castles. You will see the High, Middle and also Lower Castles. The castles are separated by many dry moats as well as towers.

During the Thirteen Years War in 1457, King Casimir IV of Poland bought the castle. Since that year, it served as one of the Polish royal residences. Malbork Castle was filling this function for over 300 years.

That situation changed in 1772 due to the Partitions of Poland. During that time the High Castle served as the castle’s supply storehouse. Polish Kings often stayed in the castle. Especially when they were traveling to the Gdansk. Polish officials from nearby cities as well as villages resided in the castle. Then, Prussia annexed the town as well as the castle.

Later, in 1945, during World War II more than half of the castle was destroyed. After WWII, the Malbork Castle as well as Malbork city again became parts of Poland.

Sadly, in 1959 fire in the castle caused even more damages. Then, the castle was mostly reconstructed. In 1961, people founded the Castle Museum. 4 years later the amber exhibition was opened.

After many years, in April 2016 the castle was repaired again and now its restoration is completed.
