The History

In October 1941 first prisoners arrived at the camp. All of them died of hunger and exposure. Within a year Nazis changed it to a death camp for Jews. They transported the first of them from Bohemia and Moravia. The next places were Poland, The Netherlands as well as Greece.

Just like Auschwitz, Majdanek wasn’t only a death camp. Nazi also made it into a prison camp as well as a work camp.

It was one of the largest Nazi camps. There were 7 gas chambers, two wooden gallows, and some 227 structures in all. In September 1943 Nazi added a large crematorium there. It contained five ovens.

In the first months, Nazis killed prisoners in a nearby forest. Later, they started to use gas chambers for mass executions. Then, they cremated prisoners’ bodies.

Majdanek was located near Lublin and for that reason, prisoners were able to communicate with the outside world. They smuggled letters by civilian workers. Many of these letters have survived. Their recipients donated them to the camp museum.

Majdanek camp existed from October 1, 1941, till July 22, 1944. Soviet Red Army, during Operation Bagration, found Majdanek almost intact. They prevented the Nazis from destroying infrastructure as well as evidence. Moreover, Majdanek was the first camp that Allied forces discovered.

Death Toll

The total number of victims is a controversial topic. In 1948, Judge Zdzislaw Lukasiewicz approximated 360,000 victims. In 1992, Czeslaw Rajca said about 235,000 victims.

For now, the Majdanek Museum informs about 150,000 prisoners who arrived at Majdanek during its 34 months of existence. Nazi during Operation Reinhard killed more than 2,000,000 Jewish people. 60,000 of them were exterminated in Majdanek, amongst its almost 80,000 victims accounted for.

However, the Soviets official count of victims was 1.5 million. Soviets say that there were victims of different nationalities.
