Activity details
Join our 2-hour walking tour of Île de la Cité to discover the birthplace of Paris. We’ll start our adventure in front of Shakespeare & Company, a popular bookshop and hangout spot on the bank of Seine. As we cross the river to explore the Old City of Paris, our Expert Guide will tell us stories about great kings, artists, writers and other notable people who shaped the history and cultural identity of France.
We’ll see top sights such as the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral, a widely recognized symbol of Paris, vividly described in the famous novels of Victor Hugo. We’ll stroll through the popular flower and bird market at Place Louis Lépine and see also the 13th-century Sainte Chapelle and Conciergerie, a former royal palace where Marie Antoinete awaited her trial during the French Revolution.
We’ll learn about the historical events that inspired “Les Miserables” as we walk across Pont au Change to Tour Saint-Jacques, which is the only remaining part of a Gothic church that was destroyed during the French Revolution. What was life in Paris like during this turbulent time, and how did the city change after Napoleon Bonaparte became a French emperor? The guide will show us the fountain and Victory statue celebrating Bonaparte’s campaigns at Place du Châtelet. We’ll also see important cultural venues such as Théâtre du Châtelet and Théâtre de la Ville, and hidden gems such as Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois along the way. Our tour will end in the courtyard of Louvre, one of the world’s most visited art museums and home to the Louvre Pyramide, one of the most popular photo spots in Paris!
