Activity details
On this exclusive tour we will provide you a detailed overview of the history of Jews in Frankfurt. You will visit the Jewish heritage sites and unreveal the history of Frankfurt’s Jewish community, from the city’s beginnings to the present day. Discover Jewish history, culture and traditions.
For the 2-hours walking tour, you will meet with your Private Guide near the Former Synagogue at Friedberger Anlage. The structure of the Nazi-built above-ground bunker serves as a tribute to the former synagogue built in 1907 and destroyed by National Socialist during the so-called “Night of Broken Glass.”
The guide will lead you through the former “Jews’ Lane” (The Frankfurter Judengasse), with it’s Old Jewish Cemetery and the Museum Judengasse. It was one of the earliest Jewish ghettos in Europe. From 1462 to 1811 it was home to Germany’s largest Jewish community, with notable residents such as Mayer Amschel Rothschild, the founding father of the Rothschild House. You will also stop by the Börneplatz Memorial, which plays a tribute to Frankfurt Jews murdered by the Nazis.
The tour will continue past the memorial to German democracy – St Paul’s Church to the last stop at the Am Hauptbahnhof 4, opposite the Main Station. This is a former residence of Oskar Schindler, the hero of Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film, “Schindler’s List”. You will notice a memorial plaque commemorating his great act of rescuing some 1,200 of Jews from certain death in concentration camps.
Choose the 3-hours option to visit the Old Jewish Cemetery and discover 800 years of Jewish history. You will see tombstones dating from the 13th to 19th centuries, including some well-known personalities such as Rothschild and Rabbi Nathan Adlrt. Your Private Guide will provide commentary on the history of this place, including its expropriation and destruction during WWII.
The 4-hours option includes, in addition to the themed walking tour and cemetery, a visit to the two branches of the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt. Museum Judengasse features the ruins of five homes in the old Jewish ghetto with a display of ritual objects and everyday items once produced or used in this area. The second Jewish Museum focuses on the more recent Jewish history with exhibitions on the family of Anne Frank and the Rothschild family.
Pick the 5-hours option to end the tour on a non-guided cruise along the Main River. You will see the old and the new of Frankfurt, giving you a new perspective on the city. The cruise will go either upriver or downriver. Upriver you will see landmarks such as the Dreikönigskirche, Main Plaza, Literature House, the industrial memorial site Ruhrorter Werft – Frankfurt-Ost and the Gerbermühle. Downriver you will see Städel Museum, Commerzbank and University Hospital.
