Activity details
The Lower East Side is known as Manhattan’s Jewish neighborhood, a cultural center for the world’s second largest Jewish population outside Israel. Follow the stories of NYC’s Jewish immigrants and discover the impact that they had on the development of the metropolitan area. Experience Jewish culture in the greatest city in the world!
Join the 2-hour walking tour to see important Jewish heritage sites, including local synagogues, mutual-aid societies, libraries, and stores established by the local Jewish community over the years. One of them is the Angel Orensanz Cultural Foundation, the first synagogue built in the Lower East Side. You will also pass the Bialystok Synagogue, which has been an active place of worship since 1826.
The next stop will be East Broadway street, where you will find the Educational Alliance, which served as a settlement house for Eastern European Jews mass immigrating to NYC at the end of the 19th century. Nearby is also the Forward Building, which housed the office of the Forverts, one of the most widely circulated Jewish papers in the Yiddish-language. The tour will end at the historic, Moorish Revival-style Synagogue-Museum at Eldridge Street.
Opt for the 3-hour option to enhance your experience with a visit to the First Shearith Israel Graveyard. This is the first and the oldest Jewish cemetery in NYC. It is maintained by the “Remnant of Israel” that has roots to the Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic Jewish immigrants from the 17th century. See historic graves and learn about the early burials of New York Jews.
The 3,5-hour option includes a 1,5-hour walking tour of New York City’s Jewish history with private transfers between your accomodation and the meeting point. This is the most convenient way to enjoy this exclusive tour. A professional driver will pick you up in a clean, air-conditioned vehicle. You will see the most important Jewish heritage sites on the Lower East Side, from the Angel Orensanz Cultural Foundation to the Museum at Eldridge Street, and at the end of the tour the driver will drive you back to your accommodation.
