Join this history tour to learn about World War II from a Czech perspective, including Adolf Hitler’s visit to Prague, the Butcher of Prague, Operation Anthropoid, the Bombing of Prague, and the 1945 Uprising. The 2-hours walking hour will start with a walk through Josefov, the Old Jewish Quarter. This area was of a particular interest to the Nazi regime, deserted in 1941 when the transportation of Czech Jews to the Theresienstadt concentration camp began. You will see the Maisel Synagogue and the Spanish Synagogue, where some valuable Jewish objects were stored with the intention to install in the Nazi “museum of the extinct race”.
In the Old Town Square you will see landmarks such as the Church of St Nicholas, the Kinsky Palace, and the magnificent Church of Our Lady before Týn. Take a closer look at the facade of the Old Town Hall which suffered heavy damage during the Prague uprising in May 1945. Luckily, the iconic Astronomical Clock has survived. Another point of interest will be the Petschek Palace, which is the former seat of the Gestapo headquarters. On the corner of the building you will find a memorial plaque dedicated to the Czech resistance. Learn about their offensive efforts, interrogations and tortures from your Expert-Guide. The tour will end in Wenceslas Square, which was used by the Nazis for mass demonstrations.
Choose the 4-hour option to visit the National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror, which is located in the underground crypt of the Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius. This the last hideout of the seven SOE-trained Czechoslovakian agents involved in the assassination of a high-ranking German SS and police official Reinhard Heydrich.
